Types of Attic Insulation
HOMETCS Insulation & Coatings is an often-overlooked space that is crucial for the energy efficiency of a home. Insulation helps to keep warm air in during the winter and cool air out during the summer, reducing the load on HVAC systems, lowering energy bills. It also provides soundproofing and improves indoor air quality. However, not all insulation is the same, and determining which type of insulation you need depends on factors such as your climate and the R-value you are hoping to achieve.
Blown-In Insulation
Known as loose-fill insulation, blown-in fiberglass or cellulose insulation is a great choice for homes in need of attic upgrades. This material is sprayed in place using special equipment, filling gaps and spaces more thoroughly than other types of insulation. It is often made of recycled materials and reduces environmental impact. However, if not properly installed, this insulation can settle over time, which decreases R-value and may lead to moisture absorption. It is also more susceptible to mold and mildew than other types of insulation.
Blanket Insulation
Blanket or blanket insulation is a traditional option for attic insulation, and is usually made of cotton, wool, or other natural fibers. It is fitted between joists and rafters, and requires the removal of plywood flooring for installation. Blanket insulation is typically a quick, economical option and can be installed by DIY homeowners or contractors. However, the cotton, wool and wood fibers can cause respiratory problems if they come into contact with dust or other contaminants.
