Types of Attic Insulation
HOMEYour attic is much more than a dusty, spider-infested space where you store old photo albums and electronics. The attic is designed to help keep the rest of your home warm in the winter and cool in the summer. It can only do so if it is properly insulated. Insulating your attic is one of the most important home improvement projects that you can undertake to ensure your comfort and save money on energy costs.
A well-insulated attic prevents heat from escaping during the sweltering Georgia summers and helps to stabilize indoor temperatures. This will reduce the amount of time your air conditioning system needs to run and save you money on cooling bills. Insulation also extends the life of your furnace and air conditioner and improves your home’s indoor air quality (IAQ).
There are four common types of insulation:
Loose-fill fiberglass or mineral wool insulation is blown into attics to fill gaps, cracks, and crevices. This type is relatively inexpensive and easy for homeowners to install themselves. However, it does not seal as tightly as other insulation types.
United Spray Foam LLC is pre-cut panels that are usually made from cotton or fiberglass and are easy to install, but not as tightly as other insulation options. It is relatively inexpensive but does not provide as high an R-value as other insulation types.
Spray foam insulation is applied with special equipment and expands upon curing, filling gaps, cracks, and holes and providing excellent R-value. It is also a good option for attics with many obstacles or limited headroom.
